One of the glaring issues along Melbourne’s Inner Circle Rail Trail has finally been fixed, with a contentious road crossing at Rae St, North Fitzroy, finally getting the yellow “priority” treatment for trail users over cars just like the trains had many years ago.
Part of the Capital City Trail that runs around the CBD, the Inner Circle attracts over one million users per year and has had priority crossings, or user-activated traffic lights, at most intersections for years, but not Rae St. Bicycle Network Victoria has been involved in trying to remedy the situation for over a decade, with quoted reasons for the delay including “poor sightlines, traffic counts, heritage rail tracks and COVID-19” at different times.
BNV pointed out in its news story that: “Official guidance in Victoria is for shared paths to have priority over local roads, a principle many councils were reluctant to follow initially.” The major issue for pedestrians and cyclists was that there was no uniformity. “This street was the last remaining non-signalised crossing where motor vehicles had retained priority, creating a hazard for those riders who expected uniformity along the trail,” Bicycle Network said.
As well as the yellow, non-slip paint, the change includes speed humps to slow any road traffic that remains reluctant to give way. The old railway tracks have been retained.
Further improvements to this busy route are expected in a City of Yarra masterplan due to be released soon.
