Friends of The Bendigo – Kilmore Rail Trail (FBKRT) continue to improve the O’Keefe Rail Trail, with 2 recent working bees helping to create a welcoming environment for walkers, cyclists and day visitors.
In November a working bee was coordinated by the Mitchell Alliance for Tracks and Trails (MATT), led by FBKRT. Volunteers included local residents and members of BEAM Mitchell Environment Group, Wallan Environment Group, Mitchell Bicycle Users Group, Mitchell Bushwalking Group and the Australian Plant Society.
This formed part of a broader project funded by a Victorian Government Tiny Towns grant, with additional support from Mitchell Shire Council. The grant is helping to restore and enhance the High Camp reserve (near Kilmore) and install picnic tables and signage.
Funding will also support the collection of oral histories from the former station and surrounding farms, and recognition of the Taungurung First Nations history.
In December, members of the group completed the first of 2 picnic table units near Junortoun funded by a City of Greater Bendigo community grant. The second unit will be installed beside the rail trail near Giris Lane, Longlea in early 2026.

Volunteers working hard yet Castlemaine to Marybourgh Rail Trail Group get Government grant to pay consultants for costing report. Doesn't seem very fair for Volunteers. Another $400,000
grant for 'preconstruction' feasibility to two local councils to pay further consultants yet, volunteers working for free….something has gone very wrong with rail trails.
