The proposed Goodwood shared-use overpass, which would have ensured Adelaide cyclists and pedestrians could safely travel over the Goodwood Railway Station and tracks, has been scrapped due to the impact on trees in an adjacent reserve. The state government has decided that the Mike Turtur Bikeway railside trail will continue to use the pedestrian underpass beneath the station (and cyclists will still be required to walk their bikes through). The underpass and access ramps will be improved with new lighting, mirrors, CCTV, drainage upgrades, resurfacing and painting. While this work is welcome, the underpass will remain a slow, difficult and unsafe option compared to the proposed overpass and it’s extremely disappointing to see that Adelaide’s most used rail trail has again missed out on major infrastructure work while another nearby one gets some.
The Marino Rocks Rail Trail crosses the same area and, while it does not use the Goodwood underpass, it does have to negotiate a narrow archway (below) beneath the adjacent tram overpass. Improvements announced by the state government include the widening of the archway to 5.5 m (below right), which will significantly improve cyclist and pedestrian safety.
