The Heathmont to Belgrave Trail in outer Melbourne will become more usable with the Level Crossing Removal Authority to extend it further north. Currently trail users taking the favoured downhill run from the Belgrave end of the Victorian railside path are dumped unceremoniously in a suburban street and have to navigate their way along busy Bedford Rd to reach the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail, Box Hill to Ringwood shared path or Ringwood Station.
The latest round of level-crossing removals will see the Bedford Rd one being trenched, leaving room for the path to reach Bedford Rd where there’ll be a pedestrian crossing to take walkers and riders to Ringwood Lake. People heading for Ringwood Station or the path to Box Hill will still have to ride along Bedford Rd, but Maroondah council has received funding from the Transport Accident Commission to design a separated bike path on that road’s northern side.
These level-crossing removal works are due to start early in 2023 and finish in 2025 while Maroondah still needs to secure funding for its Bedford Rd shared path.

The Belgrave end of the trail needs extending to Clematis, to where the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Trail begins. Then users would enjoy a trail from Ringwood to Gembrook with sections following Puffing Billy Railway
