Melbourne rail trail regulars heading out by train to try the recently lengthened Ringwood to Belgrave Trail might be surprised as they travel towards the trailhead from Ringwood Railway Station to see that a building they vaguely remember as a drive-through bottle shop appears to have moved. No, they haven’t been drinking, it has been moved to make way for the 300-space “Ringwood Activity Centre Car Park”, of which it now forms the highlight.
The project, undertaken by Ireland Brown Constructions, involved trimming sections of the 1905 Blood Brothers store before jacking it up, rotating it and moving it to the corner of Bedford and Warrandyte roads to save it from demolition. Although a vast improvement on the original design, the car park ended up costing $33.2 million, funded by the federal government ($29.7 million) and Maroondah City Council ($3.5 million). If you’re driving to the trail, you can be grateful the car park is only $6 for all-day parking during the week and free on weekends.
Meanwhile, it’s still a choice between the footpath and on-road bike lanes for the remaining 500m to the trail. The technical design for a shared-user path to fill this gap is nearing completion, with a number of residential driveways to be catered for. The council is still seeking funding from government sources for its construction.
