The Coast to Vines Rail Trail has a 4 km rural section between the suburb of Seaford Rise and the township of McLaren Vale. In the middle of this scenic section the trail crosses Pedler Creek using the original railway bridge constructed in 1914. The decking and handrails, which were added when the railway line was converted into a rail trail, are in poor condition and require replacement.
As the bridge is isolated, it will be necessary to close a section of the trail during the construction works, requiring a significant detour around the closed section of trail. To facilitate the works, the bridge will require full closure from 17 February to 3 March, 2025.
The Onkaparinga Council will be doing the work and they have advised that “due to safety concerns, a formal detour will not be provided. We encourage trail users to use alternative routes during this time.”
Confident cyclists with local knowledge will be able to use some of the local roads as alternate routes. The recently constructed shared use path along Main South Road from Seaford to Aldinga and then the trail from Aldinga to Willunga, can be used as a safer but considerably longer option.
