Register for news updatesThe all-weather trail is located in the Gilbert Valley as a direct linkage to the Riesling Trail in the Clare Valley, and marketed as part of the South Australian and National Trails network. The Trail Management Project team has been able to source $410,000 from the Regional Development Australia Fund Grant, as well as another $47,000 from other sources. The Rattler Trail Development project will upgrade a 19 kilometre section of former railway corridor, to create a safe and enjoyable trail for walkers and cyclists. It will restore six original railway bridges and repair the trail between Riverton and Auburn that was damaged in the region’s 2010 floods. Stone will be sourced from a local quarry for bridge restoration works and for surface improvements to the flood damaged sections of the trail. New decks will be constructed as the old decks were salvaged after the railway closed. Ten interpretive signage stations will also be installed to highlight local sites of significance.
It will also create a closer link for walkers, cyclists and travellers of all ages and experiences with other trails in the Barossa Valley and Outer Adelaide. The Interpretive signage that will be installed at key points along the Rail Trail between Auburn and Riverton, will provide locals and visitors with information that will give a picture of the region’s history. The new trail will also encourage the local community to participate in outdoor activities and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
This project will encourage the expansion of the local economy into tourism and hospitality based services and business creation. The Rattler Rail Trail will have particular focus on ‘cycle tourism’ as well as services for walking and wine-tasting enthusiasts. The region’s existing businesses such as local cafes, food establishments and accommodation providers will be able to market themselves to trail users and boost the local economy. The construction of the trail upgrade will also generate 11 new job opportunities in the local region.
