Register for news updatesC17 Class Loco 763 Unveiled at Murgon Trail Hub
South Burnett Mayor Kath Duff recently unveiled a plaque acknowledging those who contributed to the restoration of C17 steam locomotive Number 763. The locomotive is displayed beside the Murgon Railway Station, now occupied by the Murgon Men’s Shed, on Southern Queensland’s 88 km Kilkivan Kingaroy Rail Trail.
According to Rail Trails Australia regional representative Mark Linnett, the restored train looks amazing. “There has been a tremendous amount of work done to restore the train to its former glory from what was a rusty, damaged and very run down almost train wreck, to a replica of the train that transported cattle, people and goods in the early days. It even transported my grandfather (Fred Sippel’s) cattle to the Ekka [Royal Queensland Show]!”
The 763 was built by Walkers (Nº 424) in 1927 and entered service on 9 May, 1927. This engine and N°308 were first of a class to be fitted with large snifters in 1952. From 1950 it was allocated to Toowoomba and other stations including Mayne, Roma and Ipswich before being towed to Mayne and displayed in parks.
The Men’s Shed is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7.30am to noon. You can get a limited view of the loco if the shed is closed.
