Register for news updatesMajor Upgrade to Wonthaggi Station Precinct
The Wonthaggi Station Museum Precinct has received a major facelift, including transformation of the Bass Coast Rail Trail platform and Wonthaggi Railway Station Museum entry, to create an undercover community exhibition space.
Other works, shown in the photograph below, include upgrades of the platform retaining walls and glazing of the station platform.
The project was made possible by a $388,000 grant from the Victorian Government Growing Suburbs Fund, supplemented by $50,000 from the Bass Coast Council.
The building already holds 112 years of history of the community’s relationship with the mines and railway, as indicated by Fay Quilford, President of the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society, when opening the upgraded facility on the 16 July, 2024
The upgrades, completed by TS Constructions, have made the Wonthaggi Station Museum a focal point of the rail trail. With these upgrades the museum will be able to display the coming years of Wonthaggi’s story
Plans already in place to connect the Bass Coast Rail Trail to the Great Southern Rail Trail at Nyora will create a trail of 183km, making it the longest in Australia.
With this joining of trails (part of a council strategy known as the Gippsland Odyssey), Wonthaggi will become a major hub for this adventure. It is expected that this will promote interest further in the museum and town in general.
