Melbourne’s Inner Circle Rail Trail is getting loved to death. Having been saved from the jaws of developers in the 1970s by BLF leader Norm Gallagher and city councillor Fred Hardy, the linear park’s popularity boomed during COVID, and continues to rise. Even the public traffic counter near Nicholson St, which regularly records over one million movements a year on the path, buckled under the load and had to be upgraded in July.
Signalised crossings have been smoothed and widened repeatedly, turning lanes introduced for cyclists leaving the “Capital City Trail” to head to work in the city and priority crossings installed at intersections, but it doesn’t seem to be enough. The City of Yarra has identified a number of issues that it wants to fix, including poor line-of-sight at some intersections, lighting issues and excessive traffic volumes, but it also wants to improve the visitor experience to cope with increasing population density.
The Draft Linear Parklands Masterplan, prepared for the council by McGregor Coxhall, included an intriguing proposal to recreate the North Fitzroy Station platform as a raised picnic area called Under the Peppercorns and a “Play Plateau” near St Georges Rd. The masterplan also examined a plan to divert some of the commuter cyclist traffic onto neighbouring Park St using a contra-flow lane.
The plan met with a mixed response during the public consultation process and has now gone back to council for finalisation, possibly later this year.
