After a $150,000 feasibility study last year, Victoria’s Baw Baw Shire has allocated $2.2 million in its 2021/22 draft budget to extending the shared trail from Neerim to the Noojee Trestle Bridge. The 11 km trail project will create a continuous link between the Rokeby Crossover Rail Trail and the Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail, a total distance of about 30 km.
Danny Goss, Baw Baw Shire Mayor said “This is brilliant… something people will love”.
The last section of the railway line between Warragul and Noojee closed in 1958 and most of the railway reserve was sold to local land owners. Today there are just two small sections left; the Rokeby Crossover Rail Trail between Old Telegraph Rd West and Bloomfield Rd Crossover (a distance of 6km), and between the Noojee Trestle Bridge and Noojee Station (a distance of 3km). In recent years the community rallied together to have 10km of trail constructed to connect the Rokeby Crossover Rail Trail with Neerim South and Neerim Townships.
The Baw Baw Shire is seeking $500,000 State government funding and $1 million Federal government funding to deliver the project. “This is the absolute game changer that will change the Baw Baw Shire’s one day tourist visitors out of Melbourne”, Danny Goss said. The combined trail will connect amazing scenery and views together with villages providing accommodation, food and beverages along the way.
