The south-eastern end of the Heathmont to Belgrave Trail in Melbourne has received some long-overdue love from Yarra Ranges Council, in the form of surface upgrades, line marking and removal of overhanging vegetation. The 16km trail runs alongside the Belgrave Line but also uses some sections of the route Puffing Billy followed before electrification in 1962.
At Upwey it diverts to a path along the Burwood Hwy. The work included a pedestrian refuge on busy Main St, which is near the local shopping centre, plus widening and concreting of the path along the highway from there to Glenfern Rd, where it returns to the railway corridor. An awkward section along Campbell St, Tacoma, has also been improved.
“We are committed to promoting health through cycling and walking within our community,” Councillor Andrew Fullager said. Funding came from council’s Shared Use Path Upgrade Program and Federal Government sources like the Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
“This is just the first phase of the Belgrave Rail Trail renewal,” Cr Fullager said. “Our goal is to continuously improve this trail for community safety and enjoyment.”
The trail is getting more improvements at its Ringwood end, with a 1km extension from Lena Grove, Heathmont, approaching completion courtesy of the state government’s Bedford Rd level-crossing removal project.
