The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) provided $500,000 for the City of Greater Geelong to resurface a section of the trail between Moolap Station Road and Melaluka Road in Leopold from gravel to bitumen, as part of the 2018-2019 budget.
The works have made this 4km section of the Bellarine Rail Trail safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
As part of the upgrade, the City has also repaired two sections of the rail trail between Melaluka Road and Christies Road, Leopold, where the surface had cracked.
Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville noted that these resurfacing works will provide a safer route for people travelling between Geelong and Drysdale.
Bellarine Ward Councillor Jim Mason also stated “This work completes the missing link in the western half of the Bellarine Rail Trail, making it safer and easier for all user. It will encourage more people to jump on their bikes and to enjoy the picturesque and peaceful route.”
In further good news, City of Greater Geelong announced funding for further improvements to the popular route have been allocated in the City’s Budget 2019-20.The rail trail would be sealed between High Street, Drysdale and the new off-road path being built alongside the new Drysdale bypass, under the $220,000 project.
