The start of the Bellarine Rail Trail in Geelong has been destroyed, but it’ll be back better than ever next year. The first part of the trail from South Geelong Station, which featured a section of shared path, then an on-road section, a dangerous roundabout and a level crossing, has been swept up in the Victorian State Government’s Rural Rail Revival program.
With a second platform going in at South Geelong, the railway line duplicated and a rail bridge built at Fyans Rd to allow removal of that oval roundabout, trail users are encouraged to explore the path from east of Breakwater Rd, near the Geelong Showgrounds. When the project is completed, visitors will have an almost straight run on a new concrete trail from Yarra St to Breakwater Rd.
