The Bellarine Rail Trail now makes a great start at South Geelong Railway Station courtesy of the Victorian state government’s Rural Rail Revival Program. Where previously the start of the trail featured an on-road section, two level crossings and the crossing of a major roundabout, there is now a straight run beside Carr St next to the freshly duplicated railway line. The infamous oval Fyans St roundabout is now just a slightly kinky road, with the Waurn Ponds Line running above on a 2000-tonne steel bridge and embankment featuring artwork by Wadawurrung traditional owner Kait James on more than 200 concrete panels.
The trail navigates the realigned Fyans St at a signalised crossing before heading southeast to Breakwater Rd and the older part of the very popular 35km trail to Queenscliff. Not known for doing things by halves, the Victorian state government has included secure “Parkiteer” cages for 25 bikes next to both platforms, a bike repair station and space for a takeaway food outlet. Regrettably the 500-space car park is designated for railway commuters but rarely full and there is considerable on-street parking nearby.

It seems unlikely that V/Line could enforce restrictions on car parking without some form of registration scheme for commuters' vehicles
