A section of the Camperdown-Timboon Rail Trail is closed for the rest of the year while contractors undertake the difficult task of replacing two bridges along the picturesque Limestone Creek. Five low-level crossings were built by volunteers 30 years ago alongside the rotting original trestle bridges and became one of the most photographed features of the trail.
Now their recycled timbers have also succumbed to the ravages of age and, with narrow, steep approaches that could be slippery in winter, do not meet occupational health and safety standards.
The two northern ones have already been replaced while the two closest to the Timboon Trestle Bridge are the subject of the current works. “Lucky” Bridge 13 has escaped a death sentence after reinforcement work but will be done when funds become available.
During the closure, Timboon visitors can ride north beyond the Curdies River to near the worksite or head south on the connecting Twelve Apostles Trail for 20km to Port Campbell.
