The vagaries of Melbourne’s weather continue to hamper progress on the massive Yarra Valley Trail project, but the local council is forging ahead regardless. Section 1B has had to be split into several jobs because of the continuing soggy condition of the Yarra River floodplain and its drainage ponds.
“It’s very wet down there,” Yarra Valley Trail project manager Paul Goodison explained. The first 1.1km of Section 1B, an embankment from the Yering Station site to “Gas Pipe Junction” corner, has been topped with crushed granite and fenced while council waits for planning approval from Melbourne Water for the decking over of two wooden trestle bridges.
Under the council’s proposal, the bridges over Stringybark Creek will retain their traditional appearance when viewed from the Melba Hwy. When completed this part of Section 1B will remain an up-and-back trip from Yering until the next 2.6km to Yarra Glen is finished, from where an existing pedestrian underpass will take the trail to the other side of the Melba Hwy.
Section 2A will take the trail from there to the Tarrawarra Station site as a railside path, with that work likely to start soon as the project team races to beat rising construction costs. Mr Goodison will be providing RTA with more details at an event after the 2024 Rail Trails Conference in Melbourne on 18 October.
