Interpretive signage has been installed to honour the railway’s history. The sign highlights an old newspaper clipping which celebrated the joys of the view from the bridges: “As the train steams slowly over the structure, glimpses of the Yarra are obtained, clear and sparkling in the sunlight, threading its way through masses of foliage and over moss grown boulders, every turn in the stream making a subject for a picture.”
The last regular passenger service ran in 1980 but trail users can now experience the same stunning views across the valley, minus the train.
The new section of the 8.4 km trail, officially called 1B.1, does not connect to the Melba Hwy and, for now, trail users will need to turn around at the end of the second repaired bridge. Horses are not permitted.
There will be no access to the rail corridor beyond this point, as it forms part of the construction site for Stage 1B.2, which will take the trail along the embankment to the Yarra River. Getting it the rest of the way to Yarra Glen (Stage 1B.3) is a major project involving bridge replacements and boardwalks and is the subject of ongoing funding applications.
