The hard working volunteers from the Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail report on their latest achivement.
The Friends group has been adding a number of facilities and features along the O’Keefe Rail Trail, some of these are linking the trail with its former railway heritage. Two such features have been the replica railway marker (‘mile’) posts, and replica railway station name boards.
Two new “milestones” focused on Knowsley in April 2016 when a sunny autumn day saw it receive the last of the Friends’ manufactured concrete marker posts, number ‘83’. These replica concrete posts have been ‘planted’ as near as possible to the original post’s location, at every ‘mile’ distance between Heathcote and North Bendigo.
Also the last station name board to be placed along the trail between Bendigo and Heathcote was installed at Knowsley, to highlight the once fully functional railway station. While unable to place the name board directly on the former platform site, due land use changes, the sign is located right on the railway line alignment where a former railway ‘cattle grid’ was once located. This is one of eight stations to be identified on the trail by such signs.
These historical connections with the past are bound to create new interests in railway history for trail users learning about such former transport links, or for those dedicated railway seeking buffs, on this popular walking and cycling tourist attraction.

Unfortunately the Friends group work will not end soon. Last week a milepost near Heathcote was stolen requiring replacement. It is hard to understand the thinking of some people who put their own interest before the enjoyment of so many others.
