The Wadandi Track (formerly known as the Busselton-Flinders Bay Rail Trail) is a partially complete rail trail in WA’s South West. Two separate/disconnected sections of this trail currently exist, centered on the major tourism towns of Busselton and Margaret River. When complete, the Wadandi Track will extend for nearly 110km, making it one of the longest rail trails in Australia.
The Margaret River-Busselton Tourism Association (MRBTA), in conjunction with Tourism WA, recently commissioned a detailed business case which quantifies the costs and benefits of upgrading/completing the Wadandi Track.
The study found completing the entire track will cost approximately $16million, but would have enormous benefits for the community. The Wadandi Track will provide the gateway to the key natural and cultural experiences on offer. Prioritising completion of the Wadandi Track will be critical in establishing the region as a trails destination and getting the ball rolling on trails and experiences that hinge off the track.
Rail Trails Australia is delighted to see the completion of this business case. Due to its length and location, the Wadandi Track has the potential to be one Australia’s most iconic rail trail experiences.
Unfortunately rail trail development has been relatively quiet in WA for the past 10-15 years, so to see renewed community/political interest in this iconic trail is welcome news for the rail trails community.
