The Southern Flinders Ranges Rail Trail in South Australia is to be extended 42km from Melrose to Stone Hut where it will link up with an existing rail trail to Laura.
The existing Southern Flinders Ranges Rail Trail in South Australia extends from Wilmington to Melrose, a distance of 19km, and is currently being extended by 17km from Melrose to Booleroo Centre. The Mount Remarkable Council has been successful in securing additional funding of $329,396 from the Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program to extend the trail a further 25km from Booleroo Centre to Stone Hut where it will link up with an existing rail trail to Laura.
The rail trail, which is best described as a rubble adventure trail, will then be a total of 78km in length.
The rail trail extension will complement the Southern Flinders Ranges Project, a $10 million project jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, will transform the region into a world class adventure tourism destination with an international mountain bike track being developed at Mount Remarkable, upgraded trails for hiking and cycling – including a new multi day hike – and improved visitor facilities. The completed rail trail will play an important role in the Southern Flinders Ranges Project as it will connect the mountain bike and walking trails of Mount Remarkable National Park with similar trails near Wirrabara in the south.
The completed rail trail will also connect with the Mawson Trail, an 800km cycling trail, and with the Heysen Trail, a 1200km hiking trail.
The District Council of Mount Remarkable is to be commended for delivering on its 2008 Southern Flinders Ranges Cycle Tourism Master Plan by constructing a rail trail “that creates a journey across a large distance that encompasses stunning landscapes in a unique environment”.
It is hoped that rail trails being planned and constructed to the south will eventually link with the Southern Flinders Rail Trail.
