The Minister for Environment and Conservation, Hon. Cheryl Garbutt, announced that the Bracks Government have allocated $600,000 funding over two years for construction works.

Ms. Garbutt congratulated the Friends of The Great Southern Rail Trail for all of their hard work towards the lobbying for the funding by providing a wide range of evidence that the rail trail is supported by our community. South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Mrs. Jeanette Harding, welcomed Ms. Garbutt, her collegues and the rail trail supporters in attendance. President of The Great Southern Rail Trail Committee of Management, Mr. Eric Cumming, thanked Ms. Garbutt and her government for supporting The Great Southern Rail Trail.
This funding will be able to be used to construct the Stony Creek to Foster section to a high standard trail, like our Leongatha to Koonwarra and Meeniyan to Stony Creek sections. The scenery between Stony Creek and Foster ranges from bushland, to farmland, to forests, to the spectacular ocean views of Corner Inlet and Wilsons Promontory National Park.
Ms. Garbutt enjoyed a ride in a jinker, which was pulled by a pony.
This announcement took place at the South Gippsland Highway crossing of the rail trail between Meeniyan and Stony Creek. The South Gippsland Shire Council provided a marque with refreshments. The weather was perfect and the crowd was good, considering the short notice.
