There are some folklores, especially from a movie, that all you have to do is build it and they will come.
However the reality is quite different if rail trails are to be well used, something well understood by the South Gippsland Shire Council.
Council are the managers of the Great Southern Rail Trail (GSRT) in Gippsland, Victoria, which is becoming one of Australia’s great rail trails.
Council has just endorsed the draft GSRT Visitation and Marketing Plan for public exhibition. The Plan aims to set a direction to help elevate the GSRT from an important community asset, to a key visitor experience of the region. The Plan encompasses projects and activities that are designed to improve and facilitate the experiences visitors and trail-users will have today, and as the Trail grows and develops.

A 'visitation and marketing plan' sound like a great idea, for the expanding GSRT. I've done the GVRT a few times and will keep doing it, because it's well connected with towns, picnic/rest stops and toilet blocks.
I'll be heading out this weekend, to do the GSRT for the 2nd time. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. Last time, I stayed at the caravan park in Port Welshpool, but this will venture further out to Yarram and stay at the pub. I enjoy each journey and the experiences in any of the towns I may stop at.
I love rail trails. They are safe from traffic. But they seem to isolate one group Harness horses. Not all people can or won’t to ride bikes or walk long distances.
The rail trail at Yea to Mansfield and Alexandra have harness horses access and they encourage it.
Forcing harness horses onto busy roads is dangerous. If rail trails are truely for all then unlock the gates so we can enjoy the trails too
Pleased to see more rail trails developing. We travelled as a family group of five from NSW just to do the trails near Bright and we're only leisure cyclists. Looking forward to the opportunity to enjoy this one.
It would be lovely to have old train station buildings converted into cafes

More kilometre signs to next destination
I can't wait to ride the new extended GSRT. Just maybe it will reach Cranbourne so will be accessible from the Melbourne rail system – that would truly be awesome.
