The official opening of the Nyora to Leongatha section of the Great Southern Rail Trail was held on Saturday, 1 April. The well-organised event involved a 36km ride from Nyora to Leongatha, with free food along the way! Breakfast, courtesy of the Nyora Men’s Shed, was provided at Nyora, morning tea at Jeetho, then a BBQ lunch by the Korumburra Lions Club, and a full-on afternoon tea in the hall at Ruby by the local CWA. A free shuttle bus was provided for riders who didn’t want to ride back.
The ceremony at Loch station was performed by the Victorian Minister for Regional Development, Harrient Shing, and the mayor of South Gippsland Shire, Nathan Hersey. John Birrell and Alexander McCooke attended from Rail Trail Australia.
The event was well attended despite the forecast for showers. In fact the rain held off and there was even some sunshine in the afternoon.

A great development – congratulations to all involved.
L did the trail a few days ago, it has a good surface to it, it will be a while until it is set though, there are some hoof prints for the first few kms some has put their stock along it when it was wet to mark the trail when it dries out, it needs to be flatten out again to get rid of them, a good ride, at Koorumburra it needs a bit of fixing as it goes through the old station area, people should note that you climb up to Koorumburra then it is downhill most of the way to Leongatha if you plan to do the full ride return i hope you plan ahead for it.
