Rail Trails Australia co-hosted the first Rail Trail Tourism Forum with South Gippsland Shire at Gurney’s Cidery near Foster, Victoria, on 7 May 2025.
After a warm welcome from Cr Scott Rae, RTA’s vice-president Steven Kaye presented the keynote speech, bringing RTA’s national rail trail experience to the Gippsland business and shire representatives, and inspiring the audience to dream of increased regional tourism and economic development.
James Morphet, a Victorian who owns a European cycle tourism business with his brother, painted a picture of visitors touring and exploring the region with full support, utilising local accommodation and cafes to immerse themselves in wonderful Gippsland.
Further presentations concentrated on transport (True Blue Bus Lines), accommodation (Meeniyan Motel, Alpine Retreat Warburton and Old Hospital Loch) and bike hire (Great Southern Ride) to highlight the comprehensive tourist care available to visitors already using the Great Southern Rail Trail (GSRT).
Destination Gippsland and South Gippsland Shire demonstrated the future tourism growth vision for the area, leveraging robust tourist needs assessments and marketing opportunities. The refreshed GSRT website was revealed which naturally complements the RTA GSRT page to aid visitors.
The day was very successful, providing information, inspiration and networking for the entire audience. The local community should see further creation, development and investment of businesses to service the increased users of the Great Southern Rail Trail – what a wonderful trail!
