The Casino to Murwillumbah rail line, in northern NSW, seems set to remain closed indefinitely after a feasibility study was released by NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian on 23rd April 2013. The study has predicted a cost of up to $900 million dollars to restore the line to a standard able to provide XPT train services. The rail corridor would need to be cleared of dense vegetation, land slip areas stabilised, ballast replaced, and many deteriorated sleepers and timber bridges replaced. The report recommends improving bus services around the Northern Rivers to provide people with more frequent cost effective transport. A previous study has also ruled out using the line for freight.
The report also revives the idea of a ‘rail trail’, noting community interest in having a trail along parts of the rail corridor, with Byron Bay as it’s focal point.
