Here is a summary of the progress from closure of rail services to the beginning of construction of the first stage of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, namely the Tweed Valley section.
The idea of turning a disused railway corridor into a rail trail commenced with the Sourdough Group back in 2012, and subsequently Rail Trails Australia supported the concept and included this possibility on its web site. Rail Trails Australia plays a role in promoting and preserving rail heritage through the establishment of rail trails to enable ongoing community use of the corridor.
The author of this excellent article, David Lisle from the Byron region Echo Netdaily, provides a welcome breath of fresh air on this much debated closure and building of the rail trail.
