As we wait for the awarding of the contract and design for the construction of the Tweed Valley Rail Trail in NSW, it’s a positive step forward for the town of Murwillumbah to see Murwillumbah Cycles take up residence in the heritage listed Murwillumbah Station.
For a lot of us rails trails may just be out walking, cycling or horse riding along a trail in the countryside, but rail trails play a big role in revitalizing regional towns and villages. We see these places that once were served by traditional farming industries be bought back to life with small businesses representing food, arts and accommodation. We even see farmers taken the initiative to take up the opportunity to offset their farming income by offering “paddock to plate” retail outlets and accommodation with on farm experiences.
The Northern Rivers, and especially the South Murwillumbah area, were devastated by the floods back in 2017, and with the Murwillumbah Visitor Information Centre moving back across the road to their original building after months of renovations, it was great to see Jeff and Rachel move into the old waiting room and invest and build such a state of the art bike shop and café in the old railway station.
Murwillumbah Cycles has been a positive happening for the area as they have actively evolved themselves in so many levels of cycling and organising social rides for all age groups.
The new shop has brought a new vitality to the South Murwillumbah business precinct and offers bicycle sales, repair and hire plus excellent coffee. Rachel and Jeff are great supporters and business members of Rail Trails Australia and if you’re up this way drop in and say hello and support them.
Roll on 2022 and the official opening of the Tweed Valley Rail Trail! We are not sure but this could be the first bicycle shop that exists in a disused railway station!
