Register for news updatesByron Bay Heritage Railway Station given a facelift
Byron Council have recently competed the 1.2 million dollar upgrade for the railway station area, creating a beautiful historic space with paths and connecting cycle paths to the new bus interchange and connecting from Railway Park to the Arts & Industrial Estate cycleway.
The section has been closed and fenced off since 2004, with the upgrade and beautification works that included installing pathways amongst shady grassed areas, seating, native gardens, heritage rail equipment and drinking water fountains.
Along with new concrete pathways, the council has kept the old rail lines and filled in between the tracks with gravel, making them into shared pathways.
The heritage railway station, which was opened on 15 May 1894, is looking very smart with its recently painted exterior. Byron Council is to be congratulated on these works making this precinct part of community life again.
With construction starting on the Tweed Valley and Casino to Lismore sections of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail soon, hopefully in the not too distant future Byron Bay Council will also consider constructing their section of rail trail and connect this precinct with more of the Byron Shire and surrounding communities. Possibly then some heritage carriages could be installed near the Rails Hotel, which is part of the Railway Park to further enhance the precinct!
