Register for news updatesTweed Northern Rivers Rail Trail Getting Closer
With the good run of dry weather in the Northern Rivers, work is progressing well with the final layer of gravel being applied on the Tweed Valley Rail Trail (Stage One of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail), with the trail still on schedule to open in early 2023.
Tweed Council Project Manager Iain Lonsdale said that Hazel Bros crews are expected to lay 300 to 400 metres per day until it is completed later this year.
Workers have removed almost all of the railway track along the 24km Tweed section of the trail with work progressing well on bridges. With painting and structural work nearing completion, the bridges will have prefabricated decking and handrails installed.
The majority of the trail will be gravel, while some sections in villages and railway stations are to be sealed in asphalt and concrete.
Excitement and interest is growing from rail trail users and people interested in operating businesses along the trail. A new logo has been released to the public and merchandise will soon be available from the Tweed Tourism Visitor Information Centre which recently moved back to the old luggage check-in room at the station after the devastating destruction of the premises in the February floods.
Note again the trail is not yet open.

Great to see this progress. We are so excited to be able to rid another trail in NSW. We have strong family ties with Murwillumbah and the Tweed so it will be great to rediscover the region.

The progressive opening of these sections of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will serve to lift the spirits of a community that has collectively suffered such a devastating natural disaster.
