As we celebrate the opening 12 months ago of the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, Rail Trails Australia is pleased to announce the official opening of the Casino to Bentley section on the weekend of 23 – 24 March at Casino .
For those wanting to attend the official opening ceremony, it will take place on Saturday 23rd March with activities starting at 9.00am and the official speeches and ribbon cutting getting under way at 10.00am.
Since the opening of the Tweed section, over 140,000 visitors have visited and enjoyed the Northern Rivers Rail Trail Experience. With the Tweed section up and running, and the Casino to Bentley section soon to join, we are looking forward to seeing the Lismore to Bentley section open later in the year. This will give a connection between the regional town of Casino and the city of Lismore.
We all encourage the Lismore Council to continue with the progress to finish the rail trail within their shire . We also encourage the Byron Shire to move forward with the connection from Crabbes Creek to Mullumbimby. This will give a connection between the two regional towns of Murwillumbah and Mullumbimby. We are also looking forward to seeing the rail trail built in its entirety, but for now the ball seems to be in the hands of the Byron Council – how quickly they move on this is up to them.
Hopefully we will see the success of the Tweed section being carried forward on the southern section of the rail trail. The overwhelming support from locals and tourists alike shows just how valuable investments into regional infrastructure projects truly are – not only do these developments improve quality of life but also create lasting economic benefits while fostering community spirit through shared achievements like never before.
