John O’Brien (Rail Trails Australia Regional Representative for NSW) and his partner Kathy recently participated in the Lake Hume Cycle Classic. It was a fund raising event for the Albury Rotary Club Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.
It was attended by approx 300 cyclists, and there were 5 different routes and distances catering for participants abilities. They travelled from Dubbo for the event, but some people had come from as far away as Adelaide.
John and Kathy chose the 80km loop the Lake called the “Bethanga Beast”. There was also the 114km “Lake Hume Hustle”, the 64km “Tangam-Sandy Creek Loop”, the 42km “Tallangatta Rail Trail Tour”, and the 14km Kiewa River Family Ride”.
All the rides started at the Ebden Reserve on the High Country Rail Trail. The rail trail was used extensively for these rides, as well as some quiet country roads near the trail.
All the rides were officially started by the well known SBS sporting commentator Mike Tomalaris.
The rides were very well organised with marshals at road junctions, and refreshment stands at approximately every 30km. A sausage sizzle and drinks were provided back at the finish at Ebden Reserve.
John and Kathy also attended a fund raising dinner on the evening prior to the ride which was held at the Albury Club. A small gathering of some 50 people attended, with Mike Tomalaris and his wife Trish mingling informally with the guests. Mike then gave a very interesting talk about his time with SBS as the presenter of the Tour De France for 25 years. John and Kathy later spoke with him about rail trails and cycling in general – like them, Mike and his wife love the rail trails!
This is another example of how rail trails are being used for community events, providing a safe, car-free environment.
