Mansfield Shire Council has won a coveted award for construction of the 134km Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail in north east Victoria.
The announcement was made at the Local Government Professionals Annual conference in Melbourne in February.
Mansfield Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, David Roff said, “I was very proud to accept the award on behalf of Council, the project team and all staff from across the organisation who contributed their expertise, and the many community volunteers who have been involved in the inception and delivery of this complex project. I am also appreciative of the efforts of the Mitchell and Murrindindi Councils, our partners in the project.
“The award was in the major category of community infrastructure projects over $1 million and we were competing with large metropolitan councils such as Hume, Knox and Frankston.”
Criteria for judging of the award included: major publicly funded infrastructure delivery; maximising benefits to community; the development of partnerships; innovative features and cost benefits.
The project was cited as one of the largest local government delivered rural infrastructure projects in Victoria’s history.
Project manager Ian Geer said. “The project was made possible by strong support from successive councils, a team effort by staff and construction contractors and the enthusiasm of community and business excited by the social and economic opportunities.
“I think our community owes a big thank you to three special people: Glad Philips; Graeme Stoney; and Will Twycross who have quietly and passionately driven the project since inception.”
