The three councils responsible for the Great Victorian Rail Trail (GVRT) have engaged with Tourism North East to deliver a Strategic Development Plan for this iconic rail trail. Recognised as one of the “bucket-list-worthy” rail trails around the world, the plan aims to help the GVRT reach its full potential.
The Plan identifies actions and initiatives to help improve the rail trail experience for visitors and locals alike, foster engagement and collaboration for communities and local businesses, and drive visitation. It also recommends a new Governance structure associated with the strategic direction and promotion of the trail.
Rail Trails Australia is pleased to see the short term actions including signage improvements and seed-funding for more rail trail service businesses. Concurrently, Mitchell Shire is undertaking a feasibility study to progress extending the GVRT from Tallarook to the regional centre of Seymour as part of its revitalisation project.
The Development Plan has been endorsed by both Mansfield and Murrindindi Shire Councils and is currently being considered by Mitchell Shire Council. For more information click here to view the full Plan.
