Early October saw the return of the Around the Bay cycling event after being cancelled for the last 2-years. ‘Friends of the Great Victorian Rail Trail’ set-up a marquee in ‘The Village’ to promote the Great Victorian Rail Trail (GVRT) and rail trails in general.
With a history of bringing Melbourne’s cycling community together for a big day on the bike, Bicycle Networks Around the Bay provided an ideal opportunity for the Friends Group to connect with bike riders of all ages and abilities. Located at Albert Park Lake, The Village was the heart of the event and the start/finish for over 6,000 riders participating across six different ride options.
Also exhibiting was Tourism North East (TNE) with their very colourful Ride High Country marquee promoting all disciplines of cycling opportunities across Northeast Victoria. The GVRT is one of three rail trails that underpins their Ride High Country campaign to promote the region as Victoria’s premier cycling destination.
Thanks to the financial support of the Council partners (Mansfield, Murrindindi and Mitchell) who own the rail trail, it provided the Friends Group with a great opportunity to talk to people about the GVRT and cycling opportunities in the High Country. Increasing usage is essential to the sustainability of the GVRT and an important means of encouraging further development of the trail.
With two of the GVRT’s major access points only a one-hour drive from Melbourne, the day was a great opportunity to raise awareness of how accessible this all-weather trail is to enjoy a safe cycling environment.
