If you’re out enjoying the Great Victorian Rail Trail keep an eye out for new station nameboards proudly marking original station sites along the rail trail from Tallarook to Mansfield.
Friends of the GVRT in partnership with Murrindindi Shire Council recently manufactured and installed 5 more station nameboards at Homewood, Cheviot, Molesworth, Cathkin and Yarck, bringing the total to 13 on the entire length of the rail trail.
The new signs closely replicate the original 1910s design, and are constructed from powder-coated steel with laser-cut aluminium letters in place of the original cast letters screwed to timber backboards. Installation was carried out by council contractors with support from Friends of the GVRT volunteers.
“This is a project we have been involved with for over 2 years, beginning with Mansfield Shire Council, followed by Mitchell Council. This final section brings the project to completion, and we are delighted to see it realised,” says Ross Vaughan, Secretary of the Friends of the GVRT. “We thank Murrindindi Shire Council for its support and look forward to these signs contributing to reconnecting the rail trail with its past”.
