Good, wide, raised board walks in area that detours around army range but the bridge about 2km west of Bonegilla is poorly sign posted, narrow, low head height, and a big let down compared to rest of trail – warning sign is small, low down, and partially obscured. Overall signage closer to Wadonga also a bit vague at times.

If you turn right on leaving Wodonga station the access to trailhad is well marked with White-on-Black arrows. The 41km to Tallagatta, which we completed in 2 hours in time for a pub meal. The trail surface to Tallangatta is either sealed or packed fine gravel. We stayed 2 nights in Tallangatta motel accomodation. Day 2; we rode the 40+km climb to Shelley, rested over a lunch before enjoying the mostly downhill return to Tallangatta, 93km total. The folding e-bike with Bosch system and 400WHr battery ascended at a steady 15-20km/hr, in Tour assist mode until the last 20km switching up to Sport mode. The 400Whr battery almost made it to Shelley stopping to change to a spare 400Whr battery just 2km from Shelley. The hybrid e-bike with 900Whr battery almost completed the 93km. The analog bike rider rested each 30mins never far behind.

It gets a little rougher past Tallangatta but I managed to get most of the way up the huge incline near Shelley before it got too rough for me and I had to switch to the road. I was on a Surly Disc Trucker, 32mm tires, fully loaded (and I mean LOADED) with panniers, so whilst it's not for the lycra road bikes past Lake Hume, you don't need a mountain bike either, most "gravel bikes" will handle it just fine. Scenery was fantastic, Tallangatta a lovely spot to stop in town, the new bridge is awesome. Also worth popping just past Tallangatta for the Mitta Mitta River, especially if you're packing a fishing rod.

I thought I’d use the road bike for a change and regretted it, the surface certainly isn’t the smoothest, I’ll stick to my hybrid from now on.

It was a tough slog for the climb up to Shelley, but it was one of the nicest rail trails I've ridden, and I've done a few. The 40kms downhill into Walwa was a hoot. It'd be great on an ebike from Tallangatta to Shelley as a round trip. The gates became a PITA.

It gets a bit rough near the top and it's steep, but not that steep. Most gates have been replaced with cattle grids but there are two sections where property owners are not co-operating. I counted 11 gates, and the five near the top were a killer. There are toilets and drinking water in Shelley … on Avondale Rd.

Start of the ride remains messy after the re-modelling of the station buildings as Junction Place but plenty of parking nearby. Only 5km of fine gravel left and that's on the flat. Love the Tallangatta Showgrounds camping. You can ride out onto the trail, which I will be doing tomorrow. Rotting bridge deck near Huon Reserve reported to Indigo Shire on Snap Send Solve.

It is definitely mountain bike territory but a very scenic and rewarding ride. There were a few gates to open and close along the way. Distance markers every 2km are a plus. Highly recommended as a rail trail ride but the trail surface is quite rough in places.

Don't miss it next year. Updated the photo gallery with images from the day.

It was mainly sealed but there were parts that were on fine gravel. Very scenic and comfortable ride next to the lake – many cattle came to view as we were riding.
