Important to note that the light rail vehicles on the L4 line to Carlingford have bicycle racks fitted, which provides options for use across the whole L4 line. The L4 light rail vehicles also operate on battery power across 2 sections of the line – together with the green sections of the rail corridor where grass is used instead of roadway or stone ballast make the L4 well worth a visit.

Comment on South Coast Rail Trail and Ernest Junction Tunnel by Marty R. https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/south-coast-rail-trail-and-ernest-jtn-tunnel/#comment-57224 Sat, 07 Feb 2026 22:21:20 +0000 https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/south-coast-rail-trail-and-ernest-jtn-tunnel/#comment-57224 Hello
I visited the Ernest Junction Tunnel on the 6th of February 2026
I decided to ride from the Southport Aquatic Centre and try to trace the old line as much as possible (approx 7.7 km's each way)
Some research prior to a ride will do you well
The only actual reference to the line was at the entrance to Ernest Junction Reserve and at the Tunnel itself
Thank you to the Volunteers
The Route; Aquatic Centre, Railway St (past old Station Site), High St, Kate & Water Sts, Spencer & Jackman Sts, Loders Ck carpark to footbridge, past the community garden to Terrigal Cres, cross Wardoo St, enter pathway opposite Johnston St (no signs of Railway remains), pathway along Loders Ck, turn under Overhead Railway to Edmund Rice Rd & up towards Griffith Uni Bridge, turn left path alongside Motorway, cross Olsen Ave, pathway adjacent to houses, continue on through Geoff Walter Park and follow Power Lines, cross Activity Cres & along to Ernest Junction Res & follow path to the Tunnel
Cheers,
Marty

I visited the Canungra Tramway Tunnel on the 6th of February 2026
There is a small carpark (probably about 5 car spots) opposite the Rural Fire Brigade Station and at the intersection of Darlington Range Road
There is a Brown Sign which says "Laheys Canungra Tramway Tunnel"
Google Maps marks the Tunnel as "Lahey Tunnel"
The tunnel is still blocked off but there is a newer updated galvanised protective cage there now so you can walk right up to the entrance and see the man made tunnel
The picnic table shelter and signage boards are close to the entrance
I also walked the old trail up to Duncan Street and return
There is no signage at the Duncan Street end
Thanks to the volunteers
Cheers,
Marty

I rode from Yarrabilba to Logan Village on the 6th of February 2026
There was insufficient parking at the Trail Head at Yarrabilba so I parked in Highlands Street (near a Playground and Daybreak Park) with enough road parking
There is a concrete pathway connection that takes you to the Trail Head here
Good surface with it being bitumen and good shade nearly all the way
Good signage at both Trail Heads
Well done all
Cheers,
Marty

Comment on Caboolture – Wamuran & Loop Rail Trail by Marty R. https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/caboolture-wamuran-loop-rail-trail/#comment-57221 Sat, 07 Feb 2026 21:07:56 +0000 https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/caboolture-wamuran-loop-rail-trail/#comment-57221 Hello,
I rode the Old Wamuran Rail Trail (Wamuran Forest) on the 7th of February 2026
I did not find any reference or signage to the Old Railway although I rode through, what looked like, many cuttings
The trail was wide and the surface good as it had been slashed
It is part of the "Shared Trail" network through the forest with horses & walkers
I would recommend parking at the Raaen Rd entrance (there is a brown shared Trail sign here) as the Mylett Rd trail head is a grass track with not much more than a turning circle
There are numerous crisscrossing tracks so follow the "Shared Trail" Blue Arrow signs
I would also recommend having some mapping on your device (or a hard copy) to check your position if indecisive about the Trail Intersections
Very shaded as it is in the Forest
Cheers,
Marty

Comment on A Stunning New Rail Trail for Tasmania? Let’s Do It! by Rohan S. https://www.railtrails.org.au/news/a-stunning-new-rail-trail-for-tasmania-lets-do-it/#comment-57220 Sat, 07 Feb 2026 12:16:05 +0000 https://www.railtrails.org.au/?post_type=rt_news&p=52621#comment-57220 You will not get a tourist railway. The State Government props up the West Coast Wilderness Railway. It would shut if the funding stopped. To the Government, it is the one and only tourist railway wanted in the State. No competition.
Simply not enough population to support.
Tourist travelling the State do not have the time to travel on it. Their travel agenda is pre set.
The train when operating, was plagued with mechanical, mechanical operational, bridge, volunteer issues.

HOWEVER…you could operated a heritage train shuttle 6km between Westerway and National Park with a parallel path next to it. Cafe, bistro and bike hire each end. Why take 300 people all day by train to a destination when you can operate a shuttle where already 100000 plus people visit per year?
If I was on a luxury cruise ship for a day or two in Hobart, treated magnificently, spoilt and food prepared by world class chefs, would I spent day on an old stodgy stale 50's train served salad rolls and instant coffee!

Doesn't seem very fair for Volunteers. Another $400,000
grant for 'preconstruction' feasibility to two local councils to pay further consultants yet, volunteers working for free….something has gone very wrong with rail trails.

There are many other cycling and walking trails in the Homebush Bay and Olympic Park areas which can be combined with traversing this historic bridge, including trails on the north side of Parramatta River linking up to the Carlingford and Liverpool railside trails.

Comment on Fassifern Valley Rail Trail by Marty R. https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/fassifern-rail-trail/#comment-57196 Thu, 05 Feb 2026 05:57:03 +0000 https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/fassifern-rail-trail/#comment-57196 Hello,
I rode the Fassifern Valley Rail Trail on the 5th of February, 2026
I actually drove around first, from the Information Centre, to get my bearings and see which was the best start point for me
I must point out that the Map(above) and Google Maps are a bit ambiguous as to whether the Trail actually enters or connects to Red Bridge Road or the Boonah-Fassifern Rd.
I can tell you now that it does not (unless you go through private property) and goes up a steep climb to join Athol Terrace to go past the Bicentennial Place Lookout (the Boonah Sign).
So not knowing the above I chose the following loop;
I rode from my accomodation and up Hoya Rd and onto Pocock Rd to the Hoya Trail Head (there are some hills).
The Pocock Rd Gate is as described although the sign could do with renewing
Thank you to the people who slash the trail as this makes it rideable with a good surface of grass or compacted gravel
A couple of markers at the gates near the cemetery would be great
Cheers, Marty

Comment on Brassall Bikeway rail trail by Marty R. https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/wulkuraka-brassall-rail-trail/#comment-57194 Thu, 05 Feb 2026 05:34:54 +0000 https://www.railtrails.org.au/trails/wulkuraka-brassall-rail-trail/#comment-57194 Hello,
I rode the Brassall Bikeway Rail trail on the 5th of February, 2026.
Great path and signage on the pathway.
I decided to make a loop of it and did the following;
Parked at Wulkuraka Station (in Dixon St)
Rode up to join the path at Grace St (parking there also)
Followed the pathway up to the Rail Museum and then rode back to the shopping centre in Lowry St
Unfortunately, I could not find the river path displayed in Google Maps and the section around the shopping centre was blocked off.
Then crossed the Bremer River Rail Bridge to cross the river but the pedestrian bridge ends in a car park.
Eventually found my way out of the Car Park
Unfortunately, the Riverside Park Parkway was also closed.
Rode up Ellenborough St, Darling St East, Syntax St, Herbert St, Tallon St to the Sadliers Crossing Railway Bridge.
There is an old pedestrian way on the Southern Side (with stairs at both ends) but not difficult.
Then back to Wulkuraka Station.
Total loop was 14km's.
Cheers,
Marty
